Rescue Helping Rescue?

On Mon, 21 Nov 2011

Hello, I know of 5 Pitbulls or terrier type dogs that will be pit down in the next few days if nobody steps forward to help them. I have met them and they are amazing, sweet and definitely do not deserve the fate that is awaiting them :(

I have pictures of them all if you would like to see them. Please help them!

Hi E

Thank you for your email and wanting to help these dogs, but you'll have to send us much more information.

Kind Regards,

L

On Mon, 21 Nov 2011

Hi L,

We are working on it on our own now. These dogs do not have time to be seen, assesed and decided upon. Our rescue is one of the only ones who will go see dogs and take them right away.

Thanks,

E

Hi E,

“We” who? What rescue? Not sure why you bothered to email us in the first place then...

That’s great that you have unlimited room in foster care and resources to deal with all kinds of behavior issues. Really nice to hear that there are rescues that have no regard for ensuring only pit bull type dogs with stable temperaments are being made available to the public. You must not be worried about all the personal liability that is involved with rescuing dogs in regards to the DOLA (or maybe you have a really great lawyer on speed dial).

Our rescue however, believes in QUALITY over QUANTITY and though we’d love to be able to pull dogs at a moments notice, we understand that there are limits to what we are able to accomplish. Our rescue is built on extremely high standards (and we have the track record to prove it) and we strongly believe that any pit bull type dog that is not super friendly with people is not suitable for adoption.

Excuse us for wanting, as a RESPONSIBLE rescue, to assess dogs before placing them in family foster home environments with other dogs, children, etc.

Best,
L

p.s. See how that works? We can be snotty too!

Considering the adoption option...or not...

From: Marcus

Well I must say I am glad that this organization is there for these animals, but it seems a little easier for me to just buy a dog for myself and my kids. Sorry for the inconvenience and best of luck finding these wonderful animals a home.

From: The Rescue

Thanks for your email, and considering the adoption option :)

What other info are you looking for on B and S?

Before sending an application form, first we would like some more information from yourself - your knowledge of the breed and your knowledge of BSL? Thoughts on training, any info on lifestyle, feeding, etc The more info the better in regards to the pups future life with you!

Once we have received your reply, we will then forward you an adoption application. Once complete, we will review and hopefully arrange a time to conduct a phone interview. Once that is complete we require reference checks - personal, professional and veterinary, and then perform a home visit.

Making the best possible match for our dogs is our top priority!

Looking forward to hearing back from you!

The Rescue

From: Marcus

Hi there looking to get some more information on S and B. I am looking to adopt a dog and they both look like beautiful animals.

Are you sure you are making the right decision?

Hello D,

Thank you again for your time yesterday evening.

Myself and my colleagues have reviewed your answers during the interview, and statements made in regards to items of concern that we discussed such as quality food (grain AND CORN FREE!), training, muzzling a dog in public (though there is no standing law to do so) break sticks etc, and we have decided we do not feel comfortable proceeding any further with your adoption of DogX.

Our decision is firm, and final in this matter.

Good luck in your search,

Regards, The Rescue

I'm sorry to disagree however I took your advice on all of those situations. I don't understand why the sudden concerns. I am a very responsible dog owner and am on board with all of your guidelines.

Please reconsider, I felt i was so close to finally finding the right dog for me = (

D

D,

You talked "over" me more than once during our conversation, and your answers and statements made even after my suggestions and responses did not satisfy myself nor my colleagues.

This is why we have this stage in the process. And our years of experience and success rate speak for themselves.

You have not even met DogX, so wether or not he is the right dog is a judgement based on appearance right now, the exact thing we fight against in terms of BSL.

Again, I thank you for your time, but as previously stated, our decision is very firm and final.

Regards, The Rescue

Never mind, rescuing an animal should not be so hard for an experienced dog owner with the backing of the SPCA. Although I feel totally pre-jugged, silly misunderstandings like this happen for a reason. High success rate or not, I feel hurt and thrown aside. I pray you find DogX the home he deserves.

I will find a beautiful dog to love no matter how many more years I have to search. When I do, I'll make sure that you know just how good of a home he or she has.

D

*it should be noted there was no SPCA reference of previous approval of adoption give/available at anytime in the application/interview, nor any history of volunteering.

(and a day or so later)

The food I talked about was recommended by my vet and available at pet smart. The practices we talked about are all practices that are all socially accepted in {my town} where there is a lot of
people who demand safety first. They are also found in all the bull breed car and training books I own.

I have done a lot of research and groundwork; however, it seems that you are looking for your own answers. If you have such strict standards; you should of just laid them out for me to follow. I know that you know best, but I didn't put years of research into looking for the right dog to be told that I am an unfit dog owner.

Nonetheless I have basis based publicly or socially accepted standards of conduct in the town where i live. DogX could of had an amazing caring home with us. I hope that he still finds one that would see he through the thick and the thin as much as I would. Lastly, I'm sorry for talking over you, I was simply excited about the phone call which I took during a business meeting for your convenience. I would also state that I never said no to any of your suggestions.

Are you sure you are making the right decision?

D

D,

Your phone interview time was pre-arranged DAYS in advance, you told me you were "at a friends house, how long will this take" and i offered to return the call at a more convienient time.

Frankly, the tone of these emails, after having politely declined your application, is becoming borderline harassment, and only further affirms our decision in not proceeding. Regardless of all your "research" you are not the caliber of adopter we would choose for one of our dogs. End of
story. We have a set process and protocol, and give the opportunity for potential applicants to provide us with the answers/knowledge etc deemed acceptable in adopting one of our dogs. Your phone interview fell quite short of this in several areas. We are not saying you are a unfit dog owner, just not what we want for one of our dogs over the long term.

At this time I will as you to cease all contact with The Rescue. As stated several times before, our decision is FIRM, and our decision is VERY FINAL.

Regards, The Rescue

Your "tone" (notice the quotation marks...) leaves much more to be desired.

DogX is available for adoption OUTSIDE of Ontario, etc.

This email came in EXACTLY like this. We did not edit the spelling or punctuation. (We're sure it goes with outside the law banning the breed has been in effect for SIX YEARS . . written in his adoption bio, etc etc. LOL)

hello im very interested in "dogx" cause i love dogs especially the pitbull mix.my brother has a male pitbull and he doesnt live nerby, and my other friend that i knew for 3yrs had a female..and she was always by my side since the first day i met her. im a natural leader which is important to have a good mannerd dog. i live in toronto (keele and sheppard) and at the moment im not driving my car so it would be hard to go to training classes cause i work during the day. i have trained my other friends dogs with basic commands (sit, stay, dont touch ... ) and i think i will be ok training him at home....theres also youtube if i do have any trouble or maybe weekends...i dont have a crate but i could get one. i dont mind letting him free in my house wen im at work or where ever i do have a gate i can put up so she cant get into the kitchen or i can also teach her shes not allowed in there which i plan to do when im cooking. i know im just another person but having her would make her the only person i can say is always there for me. cause i know dogs are not selfish and always there for the oowners unlike people even family.

Contribution - Allergies and Lies

my roomate got this dog off kijiji, and I'm allergic, the dog has to go. She tells me she has tried contacting rescues, but clearly she's lying to me because the dog is still here. When can you come pick the dog up? We tried giving it back to the owner, but they won't take it. He is afraid of men. I am locked in my room because my allergies are so bad...

Contribution - You got your white "Texas Rednose" from who?

AUGUST 2010

Hey there,

I just purchased a 10 month old white Texas red nose pitbull. I was told she was really good with other dogs and she hates mine. I called the seller back who told me he wanted her back because otherwise I would have to put her in to be uthanized. They told me they wanted her back!! She now won't call me back and I am continuing to try!!!

Please e mail today and let me know if you could take her!!

Hi XXXX
[Standard reply]

I bought him for 300 from a *gentleman* who just moved here.. I paid him on Friday and THEY!! called the SPCA on me and had my dog taken by yesterday.. She has been euthanized!! The guy I bought her from has to others, and no they are not fixed. I do have his number and his address as we picked the dog up. I have every intention of having his dogs taken from him. Yes, she was up to date for shots and did very well will ALL other dogs, cats and children. She was just a huge baby!! In 2 days she was amazing, she slept on my bed and let the 5 year old children from next door wrestle with her!! She was an amazing dog. I am located in Innisfil Ontario.
Thank you for offering you're help but my baby girl is gone!! I just hope that one day soon we can have them again. They are simply misunderstood!
I had 7 before the ban happened and they were all euthanized because of the age of them. My male and female were both 2 1/2 at the time and were not spayed/neutered. I refused to have it done because my dogs are registered as Argentina Dogo's with all of their paperwork and vet... I also refused to have the registering done with the city because I know that when I do, I give them a third party right which would allow them to be able to take any of my dogs upon their convenience.. The other 5 were the last of their 9 puppy litter! When they came to view them, they were playing to quote "Too rough to test it" and so all 7 were killed because someone felt the need to hate my babies!!
Thanks again, however if you ever have an older Pitt come to you in surrender please keep me updated if their within the legislation in Ontario. I would love to take one in who is allowed to be re-homed!!
Thank you again,

Hello XXX ??? Not even sure if that's your name since there is no indication of your name in your email.
Your emails are very confusing so please correct me if I am misunderstanding something.  From your below email it would appear as though you reside in Ontario where there has been a ban on pit bull "type" dogs for the last 5 years, which you have also been aware of.  You purchased an illegal 10 month old pit bull, from some guy who has other illegal pitbulls and whom obviously does not care about the well being of his dogs since he:
1. did not screen your home and ensure that all animals would get along ( you sent us a separate email saying that this dog did not get along with your dogs... but now you are saying she did... so who knows what to believe)
2. sold you an illegal dog in Ontario.
3. has illegal dogs himself,
4. sold his dog as a "white texas red-nose" which is NOT A BREED. It is a white pit bull with a red nose.
And now you are surprised that your dog was seized and euthanized???
And you have also had SEVEN dogs previously, all whom you chose to keep as illegal, risking their lives due to unwillingness to follow a simple law (spay/neuter) and license them (which ALL ANIMALS must be licensed - not just pit bulls) therefore due to your negligence all of these seven dogs were also seized and euthanized.
Eight dogs were killed because you chose not to follow the law.  Not because of animal control who enforced the law.
And you want us to keep you in mind to adopt one of our dogs???  The dogs that we work tirelessly to rescue from shelters because of owners like yourself who blatantly disregard the law.....?????

I have a large house, which would allow for me to be able to keep her.. I had taken her because he MOVED here from Fredrickton. He had been asked to find the dog a home, so I bought her as money isn't an issue with me. I have an ex boyfriend who was going to take her to Calgary with her next week which would therefore mean I was saving her. At first, she didn't like my dogs and than after a while of moving them into different rooms where my dogs had been and rotating them they were okay as they had time to register that all other dogs lived here. Originally, they told me if I could find a home for her in a week ad a half's time then they would leave it alone as when they showed up to question me on the mater she ran, jumped on and licked the two men at my door. Considering I had just paid for the dog and was then going to have to pay to have her shipped with him I don't see it as my fault. I see it as the fault of several people who have issues with an innocent breed. She was up to date on all shots and was scheduled to be spayed by my vet tomorrow *Tuesday the 31st* and she would be completely legal minus the age dispute. I am sorry I was confusing, and I am really sorry you have to be such an ignorant bitch to me.
The people I purchased her from did not have access to the funds necessary to send her back home and therefore I stepped in. My ex has FOUR female Pit Bulls all within the legal age ban shit that is in place. And by the way
1) He did screen me, when he met with my dogs WITH HIS DOG, they were fine. When he left, I assume she got upset and reacted poorly to my dogs being there without her previous owner.
2) I don't care that she was illegal. She was a gorgeous dog with an amazing personality, and I was able to expand her life by 3 days. If that doesn't mean something, I don't think I know what does anymore.
3) He relocated here without having proper knowledge of the ban and going on hear say. I am well acquainted with the fucking ban in place.
4) I don't give two flying shits if it is an actual breed. She was a white Pit Bull, black nose with blue eyes. Her papers state she is a Texas Red-Nose Pitbull!
5) Just for you're information, I did not call the SPCA on him. Just because "my" dog had to be taken doesn't mean I want other's to be taken as well. I sure as hell thought about it but in the end, I blew off steam and cried and grieved for a while.
6) If you re read my e mail, you will see that my dogs were LEGAL because of the ban. Because they had puppies who were a month old, they seized them. Don't you dare downsize me because my bitch was pregnant LONG before the stupid fucking ban came into place. I refuse to have ANY of my dogs registered because I am fully aware that when I do, I sign over a third party right which therefore allows for the City to take my dogs at THEIR DISPOSAL! My dogs were registered as Dogo's as I clearly stated before hand. Therefore, they disregarded legal paper work and went on appearance of my dogs. They, were registered with the City and that allowed them to act on their "better judgement".
I understand they were doing their jobs, however why don't you try to do yours and not be judge-mental of my situation and the situation of thousands of others. Each and every day, hundreds of people are put into the situation of choosing their dog over their house, or keeping their dogs only to have it seized by courts and face thousands in fines.
Disregard the law my fucking ass. I love my fucking dogs so watch what you're saying!
Don't bother replying as I will simply disregard you're e mail as I have disregarded the law! It will be a waste of time on you're behalf to even bother replying to me!!
Thanks again for nothing but judging me.

Curses

Months back, we received an email from a man wanting to surrender his dog (a lab). The mans wife (poor thing) had acquired the dog, without his "permission" and he did not want it. The dog was unspayed at the time, and since all of our foster homes were full - we kindly suggested that he have the dog altered and contact a lab specific rescue (we will of course, help any breed in need, but since rescues that are willing to take pit bull type dogs are few and far between, we prefer to concentrate our efforts on those dogs).

A few days ago, we received another email from this man, who still had the dog, it was now spayed and he still wanted rid of it. We replied, again, very kindly, inquired as to where he had gotten the dog and where was he located, as we receive several handfuls of these emails in any given week (people wanting to dump their dog/responsibilities on rescue) and his situation was not ringing any bells. Below is his reply.

Not looking to dump my dog or responsibility on anyone fuck you very much and kiss my ass. I'll deal with it myself, I would suggest not working for or having an organization if you have the personality of a brick.

His email will not be returned.
